For the Girls

If you are a girl between the ages of 15 and 18, then the camden council is running something you may be interested in.

Safe & Pretty, is a 2 day training event that aims to support young women as they enter the workforce, focussing on hair, beauty, community and personal safety issues in regards to the work force.

The event is scheduled to take place over two days, monday the 12th and tuesday the 13th of April, at About Face Hair & Beauty as well as Narellan Library.

The course is FREE, but you need to attend a pre course interview.

Hello

I have been busy updating the blog with some extra useful information for you.

On the right you can now find different pages with various info, the common links page has a bunch of links to websites that can be of great use to you when thinking about careers, ill keep adding more to this, so check it every now and then.

The second page there will eventually have documents that you will need at various time throughout the year, things like work experience documents, permission slips and other relevant documents. Check this one when it's needed.

I will be adding some more posts today as i get onto a few things.

The Sydney Morning Herald is a great place to find employment, they advertise all sorts of jobs regularly and their careers section in the paper is definitely one of the best.

These guys host a careers expo each year at randwick racecourse. It's an expo thats well worth checking out.

I have some tickets if you would like them. Just come see me, but please ensure that if you take tickets, you will attend, otherwise ill keep them for someone who is.

Automotive Apprenticeships

Heya

If you have an interest in becoming an Automotive Apprentice, check out the careers section in the library.

I have just added a bunch of brochures fro companies such as Volkswagen, Subaru, Mazda, Audi, Jaguar and Land Rover.

These can be a great launching point in a career, i know, one of my mates from school, took an apprenticeship with Audi, and now he is on a six figure salary, working in Dubai and driving Audi's on the weekend just for fun.

The National Careers & Employment Expo for next year is already been planned and has announced dates.

Next year it will be held from April 30th until May 1st. Free Entry at The Sydney Convention Centre.

We don't go to this as a whole College, but if you have the time, i would strongly recommend you check it out, it will be worthwhile.

If you have an interest in science, writing or design, you may be keen to enter the bionics fro 2020 competition run by the University of Wollongong for students in years 8 to 11. The competition ask you to answer the question "what bionic parts you would design for humans, why and how?", your entry can be in the form of an essay, poster or design.

Think: Education Group

Think: is a group of higher education providers that includes places like;

Billy Blue - Design College, APM - College of Business and Communication, William Blue - College of Hospitality and Tourism and the Jansen Newman Institute.

These guys have just released their series of prospectus' and brochures. I have placed them all in the library for you!

The other element to these brochures are the flyers that outline the open days for the Business, Design and Hospitality colleges from Think:

Tax File Numbers

Degree in a Day

The University of Sydney is hosting days in which you can go along and check out what being in a Uni course is like, they call them "Degree in a Day".

The days will take place from Wednesday the 15th until Friday the 17th of April.

If you are interested, there are brochures in the library or you can log on and register at;

to log on, you will need to put in the username 'degreeinaday' and use a password, e232 for wednesday, e233 for thursday and e234 if you wish to go on the friday.

Sydney Morning Herald HSC Careers Expo 2009

The folk at Sydney Morning Herald have kindly showered me with free tickets for the expo which will be held at Randwick racecourse from 15-16 of May (A Friday and Saturday). I have put a list up of the exhibitors in the library next to the extra large posters they gave me. Make sure you check out the posters, this will be a massive career expo and would be an invaluable chance to make connections with uni's and other post-school opportunities.

Hello.

new in the library, are some dvd's produced by Railcorp. the videos talk about the various opportunities available in the rail industry. So if your interested in taking a career on the railway tracks, check em out. there's four copies, you can take them home if you would like.

Job guides, i have heaps. if you would like a copy of the 2008 one, come and see me, they cos money if you buy them in a newsagent, but i have some you can have for free.

Alternative Entries to University

A lot of Universities offer alternative entry schemes.

One such scheme that is becoming increasingly popular is the option of attending a "college" set up by the university to complete a diploma or certificate in view to gaining entry to university after woods.

Both UWS and Wollongong Uni have this type of system currently in operation. Check it out, it may be a good option for you if you didn't get the UAI you were hoping for, or would like to increase your understanding before entering Uni.

There is brochures for both UWS and Wollongong College currently in the Careers section of the library.

TAFE Books

i spent some time cleaning up the library collection on tuesday (thanks Josh and Grant). Check out the new things i have added and the ultra organized new format. Things are now sorted into universities, please keep them that way.

Also, please keep your eye on the posters at the back of the library, i change them often, their are new ones up their about early entry and university offers.

These guys take time to ensure that you do not get ripped off or treated unfairly at work. You may want to check out their website and familiarize yourselves with your work rights and the standard for how you should be paid, treated etc...

Macquarie - UAI Bonus

Macquarie University are now offering a UAI bonus points scheme for students seeking entry. All you have to do is get a UAI of 70 or more and have put Macquarie on your list of preferences, you may get a 5 point bonus. The university automatically calculates your eligibility based upon the relevance of the subject you have completed at school, to the degree you have applied for.

Parent Info Night and Sign up for a Job Day...

There is a parent career information night being held at 6pm, Thursday September the 11th at Campbelltown RSL Club. The night is being run by Macarthur Workplace Learning and is designed for parents to come along and ask questions about careers that their children may be interested in.

It should be a great night, check it out.

The other day you need to be aware of is the annual "Sign up for a Job Day". This is a another day run by MWPL and will give you the oppurtnunity to sign up for a real job, have an interview and walk away with a career. There is a dress code and bookings are required, it is very worthwhile though as their will be a wide variety fo jobs to sign up for.
